“The Vojvodina provincial parliament has once again elected a Hungarian speaker, head of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ) István Pásztor, who deserves the appointment in view of the fact that he has done a lot to create Serbian-Hungarian friendship”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday.
The Minister wrote that many compromises and even more work led to relations between Serbia and Hungary transforming from hatred into a historic friendship. “Our relations have never been as good as they are now, and not only are the two countries the beneficiaries of this, but primarily the Hungarian community in Vojvodina”, he highlighted. “On our part, we are doing everything possible to enable Serbia to join the European Union at the earliest opportunity, we are funding investments by Hungarian and Vojvodina enterprises, and the Serbians are affording the Hungarian communities living there more rights than any of our other neighbours”, he added.
Mr. Szijjártó said there was yet another expression of Serbian-Hungarian friendship this week: Despite the comfortable absolute majority enjoyed by the party of Aleksandar Vučić, the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina has once again elected a Hungarian speaker in the person of the leader of the Vojvodina Hungarians. “István Pásztor is one of the people who has done the most to create the friendship between the two nations, and accordingly there can be no question that he deserves the appointment. And this appointment is the guarantee that the Serbian and Hungarian governments have a similar approach to the Hungarian community in Vojvodina, which doesn’t divide us, but connects us”, the Foreign Minister emphasised.
