“From the perspective of Hungary’s national interest, the Hungarian government supports all measures and decisions that enable the Syrians currently living on Turkish territory to return home”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó declared in a video published on his Facebook page on Saturday.
“During all of our recent meetings, the Turkish Foreign Minister has stated that the migration situation in Turkey is becoming increasingly difficult to manage. There are now over four million immigrants living on Turkish territory, and caring for them is posing an increasingly difficult task for the Turkish authorities”, Mr. Szijjártó stated.
“Turkey now essentially has before it two possibilities: either they create the opportunity for the migrants to return to Syria, or they open the gates in the direction of Europe”, Mr. Szijjártó said. “The second scenario would to all intents and purposes mean that the Western Balkans could be flooded with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants within a few days, and if they set out towards Europe then the first barrier, the first physical barrier they meet will be the Hungarian border security fence”, the explained. “This is a situation that we must avoid at all costs”, Mr. Szijjártó declared.
“We support all decisions and measures that make it possible to avoid the appearance of further hundreds of thousand or millions of illegal migrants on the Western Balkans, and accordingly at Hungary’s southern border, and we are against and do not support any step that could lead to the outbreak of international armed conflicts in the Syrian region, because all such armed conflicts give rise to newer and newer waves of migration in the direction of Europe”, he added.
