According to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, the Iranian nuclear agreement is an international achievement that it would be a pity to abandon.

In reply to a question following his speech at the National University of Public Service on Wednesday, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said: “The nuclear agreement is globally and historically significant because it is the most important agreement of recent decades that was concluded by the international community with both the United States and Russia sitting at the negotiating table”. “This has always provided hope with regard to the fact that a solution can be reached on major global issues”, he said.

According to Mr. Szijjártó, from a European perspective this is an international political issue in which the EU was able to play a significant role, and therefore EU High representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini’s firm stand on the issue is totally justified.

“Hopefully the agreement will continue in some form despite the withdrawal of the United States, since the other participants will remain parties to the agreement”, he said.

“Iran’s stability and its inclusion in international political life is also an important security factor for Europe, because it fundamentally determines the issue of Middle Eastern stability”, he explained.

“Hungary agrees with the EU’s standpoint and with the joint declarations, and trusts that the state of affairs that existed prior to the agreement will not return”, Mr. Szijjártó declared. “Hungary has in interest in the continued validity of the agreement and regrets America’s decision, but hopes that the agreement will not be torn up altogether”, the Foreign Minister said.
