Joint Statement by Hungary and Brazil to mark the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

In 2017, Hungary and Brazil are celebrating the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. During these ninety years the two countries, which are linked by friendly ties and close cooperation, have striven to establish a strong and wide-ranging relationship.

Thousands of Hungarians left their homeland during the last century and found a new home in Brazil. Through their knowledge and talent they have contributed to the development of Brazil’s society, economy and culture, to forging closer ties between the two peoples, and to deepening bilateral relations.

In recent years, Hungary has expanded its diplomatic, consular and trade network in Brazil within the framework of its “Southern Opening” policy, and Brazil’s political, economic and cultural presence in Hungary has also increased.

Thanks to these efforts, bilateral trade, business activities and tourism, which are regarded as the three most important engines of job-creation in both countries, have expanded, and Hungary and Brazil both regard cooperation within the fields of education, research, innovation and the training of young people as important investments for the future.

Valuable diplomatic cooperation performed within multilateral frameworks now also includes the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), which Hungary joined as an observer member in 2016.

On the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, it is the firm intent of Hungary and Brazil to realise even closer cooperation and to fully exploit the rich opportunities for cooperation that exist within bilateral relations, in strategic partnership between the European Union and Brazil, and within the framework of international organisations.
