“The memorial to the victims of Hableány pleasure boat disaster is currently being designed and is expected to be unveiled in Budapest this autumn”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on his Facebook page on Monday.

Mr. Szijjártó reported on the fact that he had held talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha on Monday, who thanked Hungary for its solidarity during the boat tragedy a year ago, and for the commemoration held on the anniversary of the accident.

He also mentioned that the parties had expressed their mutual acknowledgement with relation to their efforts to protect against the coronavirus pandemic. “The Korean Foreign Minister expressed his thanks with relation to the fact that Hungary has allowed the employees of Korean enterprises to travel to Hungary, while I expressed my thanks for the investment projects realised by Korean enterprises in Hungary”, Mr. Szijjártó wrote, highlighting the fact that last year Korean enterprises decided on the largest total volume of investment in Hungary. “Thanks to the investment projects realised by Samsung SDI and SK Innovation, Hungary has become the European bastion of the electric vehicle industry. Thanks also to these investment projects, trade flow between our two countries is also increasing dynamically, growing by 21 percent year-on-year during the first quarter of this year”, the Minister wrote.

“Cooperation between the two countries within the field of international politics is also close: Hungary is supporting South Korea’s bit for membership of the UN Security Council, and is calling for the earliest possible commencement of negotiations between the European Union and South Korea concerning an investment protection agreement”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade emphasised.
