“Mexico will be the most important pillar of Hungary’s presence in Latina America in the upcoming years, and its importance in Hungarian foreign trade is continuously increasing”, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Parliamentary State Secretary Levente Magyar said on Thursday in Budapest at a press conference following the third session of the Hungarian-Mexican Joint Committee.

The State Secretary highlighted the fact that the Central-American state is the world’s 15th largest economy and the 2nd largest in Latin America, and accordingly Hungary views it as a long-term economic and political ally, stressing that last year Hungarian exports to Mexico increased by an almost unprecedented 60 percent.

“The meeting that has just ended also indicated the importance of Latin-American relations, reinforcing the fact that Mexico is in first place within Hungary’s regional system of relations”, Mr. Magyar declared.

He stressed that the two countries had decided to mutually reinforce their cooperation, scholarship programmes have been launched in the interests of deepening cultural and education relations, and the work of the Economic Joint Committee has been accelerated, as have several projects primarily within the fields of science, technology and water management.

After signing the minutes of the meeting, Deputy Director General for Bilateral Economic Relations Armando López Trujillo declared that Mexico is happy to take part in the joint work that began two years ago and it committed to tightening relations.

The head of the Mexican delegation added that there are also opportunities for cooperation in many other fields, including the healthcare sector, and accordingly relations between the two countries will become even closer in the upcoming years.
