“Over the past two days, 595 respirators, 4 million 200 thousand face masks and 2 million 900 thousand pairs of gloves have arrived in Hungary from China”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI prior to Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.
The Minister said pieces of news are regularly arriving with relation to the fact that Western European countries are easing the measures they have introduced in the interests of slowing the spread of the coronavirus epidemic. “However, concerns with relation to the fact that the spread of the virus could accelerate as a result of increased human contact are also being published continuously”, he added.
According to Mr. Szijjártó, there is major debate concerning these issues, and nobody knows exactly what will happen. “One thing is certain, however: an increase in the number of human contacts is capable of accelerating the spread of the pandemic, and a more rapid spread can increase pressure on the healthcare system”, he stated.
The Minister emphasised that accordingly the task and duty of the government continues to be to prepare the Hungarian healthcare system by ensuring that the equipment that is vital to protection is continuously available. He added that the millions of pieces of equipment that arrived in Hungary on Tuesday and Wednesday will also be distributed within the healthcare system.
