On Tuesday in Budapest, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó had talks with the Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba about Hungarian-Cuban economic cooperation. According to the communication of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Szijjártó received Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz in his office. In 2016, the European Union and Cuba signed an agreement on political dialogue and cooperation, as part of which Member States of the EU maintain relations with Cuba, the communique sent to the Hungarian news agency MTI reads.

They highlighted that Hungarian-Cuban economic cooperation concentrates on water management and the food industry. A Hungarian water purification station supplies five thousand Cubans with drinking water in territories earlier devastated by Hurricane Irma, and further projects seeking to modernise Cuba’s water supply system are expected to be implemented.

The Cuban government is attempting to replace food imports with domestic supplies, and is planning to create chicken and pig farms with the involvement of Hungarian companies. Consultations regarding the financing of the projects are already underway with the International Investment Bank (IBB), the communique reads.
