On 19–23 April 2016, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is organising a five-day event entitled “Southward Opening Diplomat Days” for Latin American states’ foreign affairs representatives responsible for Europe, including Hungary. The host of the event is Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Dr. László Szabó.

In his welcoming speech on Tuesday evening, Szilveszter Bus, the Deputy Minister of State responsible for Southward Opening, said that the guests are seen as a kind of “investment” based on mutual benefits. He also hoped that, after their return to their capitals – and armed with local knowledge about Hungary and ideas arising in the discussions – they will be able to actively contribute to the further improvement and enrichment of relations with the countries of the region.

On the first day of the event Mr. Szabó received the guests, pointing out that Latin America is one of the new focus regions for his country’s renewed foreign policy; thus, through a strengthened institutional system, Hungary is looking to explore as yet unexploited opportunities in interstate political and economic relations. Hungary’s goal is to build partnerships which benefit both sides, and so, in addition to showing the guests Hungary’s strengths, Hungary is also seeking to discover cooperation opportunities.

Diplomats arriving in Hungary as part of the event will meet state representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Ministry of Human Capacities and the Prime Minister’s Office. During specialist meetings they will have the opportunity to get to know Hungary’s place in Europe and in the world.
