“Traffic and tourist restrictions are expected over the weekend in the Italian capital because of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome”, the Consular Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade informed Hungarian citizens travelling to Rome.

On 24 March, the day of the anniversary, Police will be setting up two separate zones with different levels of security in the city, the statement warns.

The green zone will be set up around the Quirinale in a trapezoid shape starting at St. Peter’s Basilica and including the area bordered by Via Nazionale, Via de Corso, the Piazza della Republica and Via del Tritone, including Corso Vittoria Emanuelle.

In this zone, restrictions will come into force at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, and traffic and all entrants will be checked using 18 entry gates.

The stricter blue zone will be set up around the Capitoline Hill and will include the area of Piazza Venezia, Piazza dell'Ara Coeli, Piazza San Marco, the Fori Imperiali and Piazza Madonna di Loreto. Only authorised persons may enter this zone through one of 21 gates following a strict security check; road and pedestrian traffic will not be allowed. Blue zone restrictions will come into force at midnight on Friday.

All restrictions will remain in force until midnight on Saturday.

The underground will not stop at stations that are closed or are in one of the monitored zones. The Colosseum and the Forum Romanum will also be closed.

Visitors to Rome must also expect to encounter authorised marches and rallies throughout the city. Restrictions on movement, stricter monitoring and a higher level of alertness will be in force in the area of these events. The Consular Service has asked tourists to avoid crowded events and be more cautious than usual.
