Minister of State for Security Policy and International Cooperation Dr. István Mikola was part of the Hungarian delegation at the Informal Ministerial-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly held to discuss one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our age, the conflict in Syria.

The international community must increase aid activities in Syria as soon as possible, while flexibly adapting to changing requirements, it was declared at the meeting, at which participant searched for global solutions to the crisis. The need for further action is increasingly urgent in view of the fact that the situation in Syria has worsened since the last UN General Assembly; the number of people in need now exceeds 12 million, around half of whom are children. Accordingly, the international community has not succeeded in preventing the concerns voiced last year regarding a “lost generation” from becoming a reality.

Providing stabilisation and development funding, increasing the capacity of refugee camps in countries neighbouring Syria and special protection for women and children: these are the main goals determined by the meeting’s participants in addition to expanding humanitarian aid activities and improving access to them.
