“Nothing is more important than the safety of the Hungarian people”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Friday in Budapest at a press conference on another topic.

In reaction to the hostage drama in France on Friday, the Minister said. “We are protecting Hungary and the people of Hungary from a similar threat of terrorism and similar terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, events such as this once again underline the fact that nothing can be more important than people’s safety”.

“Europe must be made safe once again, and the continent’s most important task is to protect against terrorism. Hungary will always assist France in the fight against terrorism”, the politician declared.

Mr. Szijjártó told the press that there is currently no information concerning any Hungarians having been injured in the attack, which occurred in southern France.

“We express our sympathies to our French friends and assure France and the French government that they will always be able to count on Hungary in the fight against terrorism”, the Minister stressed.

Mr. Szijjártó said the Hungarian Embassy in Paris had immediately contacted the local crisis centre, and the French authorities had promised to provide information immediately if they become aware of any Hungarian involvement.

The Foreign Minister emphasised that the Government is well aware of its obligations and is doing everything possible to assure the safety of the Hungarian people.

“Attacks like the one in France also underline the fact that security is the most important criteria”, he added.
