Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó held bilateral talks with British Deputy Prime Minister David Lidington, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade informed Hungarian news agency MTI on Wednesday.

According to the Ministry’s statement, at the meeting Mr. Szijjártó said: “Hungary regrets the fact that Great Britain will be leaving the European Union, but respects the decision of the British people”. “Hungary is striving to assure that the EU and Great Britain can continue to realise close cooperation within the fields of the economy, trade and investment following Brexit”, he added.

Mr. Szijjártó also highlighted the importance of continued security cooperation, explaining that the European Union is facing major security risks and Great Britain is vital to ensuring the restoration of European security. With relation to this, the Minister stressed: “British participation in the EU’s various military and peacekeeping missions must be maintained”, reads the Ministry’s statement, reporting from the economic forum currently being held in the Lesser Polish town of Krynica-Zdrój.
