Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó held negotiations with his Belarusian counterpart Vladimir Makei by phone today to discuss the challenges Europe faces as a result of modern-day mass migration. Mr. Makei assured Hungary of the Belarus Government’s support in handling the challenges posed by the migration.

The two Ministers of Foreign Affairs reviewed European Union sanctions against Belarus, with relation to which Mr. Szijjártó said that Hungary acknowledged the steps taken by Belarus which resulted in persons who had been imprisoned for political reasons being freed.

According to the Hungarian Government, this is a decisive step towards cooperation with the EU on the part of Belarus, in view of which Hungary is calling for the lifting of EU economic sanctions against Belarus at the earliest opportunity.
