On 21 June 2019, State Secretary for Defence Policy Péter Sztáray met with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Budapest Mohammed Al Matrafi, with whom he reviewed the increasingly tense security situation in the Persian Gulf region, with particular attention to the attacks and sabotage attempts against Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

With relation to the rocket attack by Houthi insurgents from Yemen against the airport of Abha in Saudi Arabia on 12 June, in which 26 civilians were injured, Mr. Sztáray stressed: “Hungary condemns all acts of terrorism in the strongest possible terms, and particularly attacks against civilian targets and the civilian population”. The State Secretary also expressed his sympathy towards the injured civilians.

Mohammed Al Matrafi reported on the Saudi position with relation to Yemen. At the meeting, the parties discussed the tensions that have developed in the Persian Gulf region, stressing the need to resolve problematic issues through negotiation.
