Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has come to an agreement with Slovakian Economy Minister and interim Foreign Minister Rihard Sulik on the fact that the two countries will be reopening the border crossing station at Somoskőújfalu, which has been closed because of the coronavirus epidemic, thus enabling Hungarians and Slovakians who live on either side of the border to commute to work using the border crossing station. Mr. Szijjártó made the announcement in a Facebook post on Sunday.
“At the beginning of this week, my fellow MP Károly Becsó said in Parliament that the closure of the border crossing points along the Hungarian-Slovakian border represents a major problem for people living in Nógrád County. The area’s factories are suffering because employees cannot cross the border to work, and accordingly an agreement was reached on Sunday on the reopening of the border crossing station”, the Hungarian Foreign Minister wrote in his post.
“The economies of Hungary and Slovakia are closely intertwined, and bilateral trade flow exceeded 10 billion euros last year, and accordingly it is in our fundamental interests to maintain unhindered trade links”, Mr. Szijjártó said.
