The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade expresses its profound disappointment at the news that President of Romania Klaus Iohannis has rescinded the “Star of Romania” state decoration bestowed on László Tőkés – MEP, retired Reformed Church pastor and outstanding representative of Transylvanian Hungarians – by former President of the Republic of Romania Traian Băsescu in 2009 for Mr. Tőkés’ role in the Romanian Revolution of 1989.
In view of the undying merits achieved in recent Romanian history by Mr. Tőkés, this action is also difficult to comprehend in a European context. The decision of the Romanian president is also totally at odds with the constructive spirit of negotiations between the foreign ministers of Hungary and Romania. Péter Szijjártó and Lazăr Comănescu recently agreed on the further development of relations between the two countries.
