According to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, the decision of the European Parliament (EP), as a result of which Article 7 proceedings could be launched against Hungary, was arrived at through cheating.

Speaking on Hungarian M1 television’s Wednesday evening current affairs programme, the Minister said: “The vote was a fraud because the European treaties stipulate how decision-making must occur in the EP; similarly to Hungary’s parliament, the no votes and abstentions are set against the yes votes, but in this case they decided to ignore the votes in abstention”.

According to Mr. Szijjártó, there was no doubt with relation to the result of the Tuesday vote in view of the fact that it was already absolutely clear beforehand that the exclusive cause, stake and topic of the vote was migration.

Based on previous statements, it was already clear that the pro-immigration politicians have a major majority within the European Parliament and, as proven by today’s vote, also within the European People’s Party (EPP).

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was nevertheless present in person on Tuesday at the plenary session of the European Parliament because, as Mr. Szijjártó stated, this is a matter of honour for the Government.

“In such a situation, in which Hungary is being attacked unfairly and in an unsubstantiated manner, and when the decision of the Hungarian people is being called into question and they wish to condemn that decision, one must be there and one must defend Hungary”, he said.
