According to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is incapable of accepting the decision of the Hungarian people, according to which Hungary will not be an immigrant country.
Mr. Szijjártó reacted to the German President’s speech on Monday in a telephone statement to Hungarian news agency MTI. Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: Illiberal democracy is a self-contradiction, because democracy is either liberal, or it isn’t democracy. He declared that “in certain countries, including in the EU, they are questioning liberal democracy and the rule of law, and introducing strong restrictions to or even doing away with legal guarantee structures and mechanisms”. According to the DPA news agency, the German President noted that to understand this it is enough to examine the last speech Viktor Orbán made in Tusnádfürdő.
“Frank-Walter Steinmeier knows perfectly well that in April the Hungarians gave the Orbán government a two-thirds parliamentary mandate for the third time now within the framework of democratic elections”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade declared. “This is precisely what the left-wing, pro-immigration German President of the Republic isn’t happy about. They are incapable of accepting the decision of the Hungarian people, according to which Hungary will not be an immigrant country”, he stressed.
“In recent years we have learned from countries that profess to be so-called liberal democracies that they are incapable of protecting their citizens from illegal immigration, and in fact do not even ask the people their opinion on the issue”, he explained. “We can see that immigration is also becoming an increasingly serious problem in Germany”, he added.
“In contrast, the Hungarian Government has asked the people’s opinion on several occasions, and is acting accordingly. This is what we regard as a democratic value”, Mr. Szijjártó declared.
