The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Parliamentary State Secretary called the initiative put forward by the governing parties according to which Hungary will be vetoing all decisions that are aimed against Poland “Appropriate, timely and welcomed”.

During the parliamentary debate of the proposal for a resolution on Tuesday, Levente Magyar stressed: Hungary has also been attacked via Poland, and the action of the European Commission (according to which it has launched Article 7 proceedings against Poland because of controversial judicial reforms) is also at least as much of a message for Hungary and the Visegrád Group. According to the State Secretary, the attack by the European Commission is unlawful and unfair, and the procedure is also disrespectful towards Poland.

Mr. Magyar made it clear that the Government supports Poland: “Whether we call the procedure against Poland a witch-hunt or an inquisition, the point is that Poland has suffered an unfair political attack”, he said. According to the State Secretary, what probably lies behind the issue is the historic increase in Central Europe’s economic weight, which is also becoming increasingly evident from a political perspective.

The proposal was put forward by Fidesz parliamentary group leader and Chair of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Zsolt Németh and two KDNP MPs.
