“The Government will continue to protect the security of Hungary and the Hungarian people in future, and is giving the strongest possible indication of the fact that it in no way regards documents that are at odds with this to be applicable to Hungary”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó declared on Kossuth Radio’s “Sunday papers” show.

With relation to the UN Global Compact for Migration, Mr. Szijjártó stressed: “It has already been proven with relation to the European Union that a migration policy which can be construed by anyone as an invitation is dangerous”.

According to the Minister, countries that do not implement the UN’s global package, which promotes migration and ignores the related security risks, will be much better off.

In his statement, Mr. Szijjártó confirmed that at next week’s Cabinet meeting he will be proposing that Hungary exits the “adoption phase” of the Compact and that the Government should regard the approaching decision as non-applicable with relation to Hungary.

According to the Minister, the fundamental concept behind the UN Global Compact for Migration is unacceptable and extremely dangerous, because it attempts to put migration across as a fundamental human right, while totally ignoring the rights of people who simply want to live in peaceful and safe conditions in their own homelands.

Mr. Szijjártó pointed out that the United States exited the negotiations in late 2017, and that there are other dissatisfied countries in addition to Hungary; many countries have voiced their concerns and expressed their disagreement with the proposals. As an example, he pointed out that several Far Eastern countries, including Singapore and Australia, have also expressed criticism.

“However, a decisive majority of the UN’s 193 member state are ‘source countries’, as a result of which the organisation could adopt a one-sided, unbalanced and extremely pro-immigration document with the support of African, Latin American and small island states”, the Minister explained.
