Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó condemned the latest attack against Transcarpathian Hungarians, calling it obnoxious and highlighting. “It is unacceptable for Hungarians to have to live in fear in the land of their birth, in Transcarpathia”.

In a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI on Friday, the Minister explained that at dawn on 16 March unknown assailants smashed the windows of two bearing with Hungarian number plates in Beregszász (Berehove). Based on the long, thin impact marks, it is probable that the damage was caused by a baseball bat. The housing estate where the attack occurred is completely secluded and the parking lot is only used by the people who live there, he wrote.

“Following the two bomb attacks against the headquarters of the Transcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association (KMKSZ) in Ungvár (Uzhhorod), it is now absolutely clear that we must now refer to a trend”, Mr. Szijjártó highlighted.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade once again called on the Ukrainian authorities to protect Hungarians from attacks by extremist forces.

“Unfortunately, this incident also proves that the permanent presence of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s monitoring group in Transcarpathia is totally justified”, the Minister said.
