“The road to peace and stability in the Western Balkans leads through European and Euro-Atlantic integration, and accordingly Hungary is a committed supporter of Montenegro’s integration”, Péter Szijjártó said after talks with Speaker of Montenegrin Parliament Ranko Krivokapić in Budapest.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Hungary’s standpoint at the December meeting of NATO foreign ministers will be that Montenegro should receive an immediate invitation to join the military alliance.
“It is in Hungary’s interests for there to be peace and stability in the Western Balkans, and time has shown on many occasions that the road to this leads through European and Euro-Atlantic integration. This is why we must accelerate Western Balkan integration; it is in Hungary’s interests”, Mr. Szijjártó stressed.
The Speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro emphasised that Hungary has been Montenegro’s “mentor” in recent years and the country would be in a much more difficult situation without Budapest’s support.
Montenegro also expects to receive an invitation to join NATO in December, and if admitted would contribute to ensuring the security of the Mediterranean shoreline from Portugal to Turkey, Mr. Krivokapić explained.
