Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó called the Sargentini Report “a collection of qualified lies” at a press conference in Budapest on Monday.
“The Report is an unfair attack against Hungary, an attempt at revenge because Hungary is protecting its borders and is refusing to admit illegal immigrants”, Mr. Szijjártó declared, adding that there are many in today’s European Parliament who support illegal immigration.
The Foreign Minister highlighted the fact that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will be present in person at Tuesday’s debate on the report in the European Parliament, and will defend Hungary.
Mr. Szijjártó also spoke about the fact that there is also a major debate ongoing within the European People’s Party on how to approach the issue of migration. Hungary is engaged in the debate “with major energy”, he told the press.
The Minister explained that he trusts that in future, and particularly during the course of the European Parliament election campaign, the European People’s Party will, in harmony with the will of European citizens, be representing an anti-immigration policy that concentrates on the security of the European people.
