“The situation surrounding Slovakia’s so-called Anthem Act has been resolved today”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a statement to Hungarian new agency MTI.

“The legislation, which came into force today, clearly states that Hungarians, and also people of other nationalities, of course, are free to sing their national anthem”, the Minister stressed. “We remain prepared to develop our bilateral relations based on mutual respect”, he emphasised.

The new law was originally proposed by the Slovakian National Party (SNP). After the section of the legislation dealing with the singing of national anthems received heavy criticism, Chairman of the SNP Andrej Danko announced in April that an agreement had been reached within the coalition that the problems arising from the Act will be resolved in such a way that everyone will be satisfied and nothing will hamper Slovakian-Hungarian relations.
