“The statement concerning Hungary made by the German social democratic Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is unacceptable political finger-pointing that is totally unfounded”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Parliamentary State Secretary declared at a press conference on Monday.

Levente Magyar made the declaration after the German Ambassador to Budapest was summoned to the Ministry with relation to the fact that German politician Michael Roth accused Hungary of being anti-Semitic on Saturday. The State Secretary said there is no other culture or country that Hungarians respect more than Germany, and it is based on this respect that Hungary is basing bilateral relations between the two countries, which is achieving spectacular success in many fields. “However, there exists a resolutely anti-Hungarian group within the German government, one of the fanatical spokespersons of which is Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Michael Roth, and this group makes regular attacks against Hungary, and accordingly against the whole system of Hungarian-German relations”, he said, pointing out that this is also what happened on this occasion, when Michael Roth accused not only the Hungarian government, but Hungary itself and accordingly all Hungarians, of being anti-Semitic.

Mr. Levente said that no matter how good Hungarian-German relations, there comes a point when we must declare: “This far, and no further!”. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Parliamentary State Secretary said Germany’s Ambassador to Budapest had been summoned to visit the Ministry on Monday morning in view of the German politician’s statement, and was in formed that the statement by the German Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is unacceptable political finger-pointing that is totally unfounded, which “makes this politically motivated statement offensive and particularly obnoxious”. He added that had told the Ambassador that Germany has absolutely no moral basis for talking about anti-Semitism with relation to Hungary, particularly when it does so without any foundation as a political instrument and attack. Mr. Magyar also said that the Hungarian government has an interest in Hungarian-German relations continuing to be outstanding, and will be working to ensure that the German government’s social democratic, anti-Hungarian “current” is unable to disrupt this otherwise excellent relationship.
