Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó held talks with President of the Transcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association (KMKSZ) László Brenzovics in Budapest on Thursday; according to the Minister, the Ukrainian authorities must guarantee the security of Transcarpathian Hungarians.

At the meeting, Mr. Szijjártó evaluated the security situation that has developed in Transcarpathia.

“The series of attacks against the Hungarian minority are cause for concern. We expect the Ukrainian authorities to guarantee the safety of Transcarpathian Hungarians, in addition to which we welcome the increased presence of OCSE observers in Transcarpathia”, the Foreign Minister said.

“Hungary will only be able to once again support Ukraine’s European and Transatlantic aspirations if it refrains from bringing into force laws that restrict the rights of the Hungarian minority”, Mr. Szijjártó highlighted.
