“The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has declared war on the Hungarian Government for protecting the security of the Hungarian people against illegal immigration”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI on Monday.

In the statement, the Minister reacted to the fact that at Monday’s opening of the 38th session of the UN Human Rights Council, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein criticised U.S. immigration policy, China, Myanmar and Hungary.

The High Commissioner criticised Hungary because of the “Stop Soros” legislative package, which is currently in preparation, in view of the fact that it would introduce restrictions against organisations that help refugees and sanction human rights-related observation on the border and in border zones, as well as the collection of information and the provision of legal aid to migrants.

“We suggest that the High Commissioner take note of the facts, according to which over 330 people have died and over 1300 have been injured in Europe ‘as a result of attacks by terrorists with migrant backgrounds’ over the past three years”, Mr. Szijjártó stated.

The Minister stressed that Hungary regards illegal immigration as a national security issue, and “The goal of the ’Stop Soros’ legislative package is to stop and punish anyone who organises illegal migration and wants to flood Europe with migrants”, Mr. Szijjártó added.
