The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Deputy State Secretary for Communication and Parliamentary Coordination Tamás Meczer regards it as astounding that the U.S. State Department’s former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State has insulted the people of Hungary in a recent statement.

In a statement on Monday, Mr. Menczer wrote: “Thomas O. Melia is a fallen follower of George Soros, who was forced to leave the United States Department of State. It is astounding that he speaks with praise about George Soros while insulting the Hungarian people”.

The Deputy State Secretary was reacting to the fact that in an interview for Hungarian daily Népszava, Thomas O. Melia said it was uncertain how far NATO allies were prepared to go without any concern in sharing military secrets with “a Hungary that is maintaining an increasingly intimate relationship with Putin’s increasingly aggressive Russia”. “I don’t understand how the Hungarians can tolerate this after what Russia did to Hungary during the years of communism. Has historical memory ceased to exist?”, he said.
