On Tuesday Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Tibor Navracsics said that an extraordinary summit of the European Union could be held at some time next week to reach agreement on whether to introduce a third round of sanctions against Russia in connection with the Ukraine crisis.

Speaking in Brussels, Mr.  Navracsics said that the foreign ministers of EU Member States had collectively asked the European Commission to make preparatory arrangements by Thursday which would enable the extension of boycotts to Russia’s  financial and defence sectors; an additional proposal would be an embargo on dual-use technology and sensitive and innovative technologies that are of key importance to the Russian economy  ̶  including the energy sector.

He said that all those at the meeting agreed that the most important and urgent task is to launch an independent investigation aimed at identifying those responsible for downing the Malaysia Airlines passenger jet in Eastern Ukraine last Thursday.
