“The fact that a meeting has taken place between U.S. President Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is proof of the fact that relations between Hungary and the United States have moved into a new dimension and arrived at a new chapter”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó declared in New York in a statement to public media with relation to the meeting held in the White House in Washington D.C. on the previous day.

“The way in which the meeting was held is also proof of the mutual sympathy between the two leaders” he added. “President Trump expressed his agreement and sympathy with the Hungarian Prime Minister through extremely rare gestures. The private meeting in the Oval Office, for which only 11-12 minutes are usually devoted, lasted around 40 minutes, and it is also rare for the U.S. President to accompany one of his guests all the way to the entrance of the White House, as he did Viktor Orbán on this occasion. The President and the Prime Minister were able to hold an unrestrained meeting in an open atmosphere”, said Mr. Szijjártó, who also attended the first, private portion of the meeting and the later, plenary session of the Hungarian and American delegations.

The Minister also spoke about the fact that Donald Trump showed a particular interest in European processes. Amongst others, Ukraine was an important part of the agenda: there was agreement on the fact that the person of the new President could provide renewed hope that relations between Hungary and Ukraine, and between Ukraine and the whole of the European Union, might be placed onto new foundations.

“The economic results that Hungary has achieved in recent years generated a high level of appreciation from the U.S. President”, Mr. Szijjártó said. “Although in two different dimensions, the economies of the two countries show a similarity with relation to the fact that more people than ever are now working in the Unites States, and never since the regime change have there been so many people in employment in Hungary. This indicates that both the U.S. President and the Hungarian Prime Minister have been capable of realising a successful economic policy”, the Foreign Minister said in assessment.

“In Washington, the two leaders themselves noted that they have made lots of people jealous as a result in international politics, as also indicated by the attacks in the international media. However, they also both determined that American public opinion has confidence in Donald Trump, and the Hungarian people regularly assure their government and Prime Minister of their support”, he added.
