“Following lengthy negotiations, we have succeeded in coming to an agreement with the Austrian authorities, and accordingly the border crossing points linking Jánossomorja and Andau, and Alsószölnök and Neumarkt, will be opened to passenger traffic on Wednesday morning”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on his Facebook page on Tuesday evening.
In the statement, the Minister wrote that in recent weeks all European countries, including Hungary, have restricted passenger traffic along their borders in view of the coronavirus pandemic. “This has caused major difficulties for people whose workplaces are on the other side of the border”, he pointed out.
“My fellow MPs István Nagy and Zsolt V. Németh contacted me with relation to the fact that we should come to an agreement with the Austrian authorities regarding the opening of the Jánossomorja and Alsószölnök border crossing points, to make life easier for commuters. Following lengthy negotiations, we have succeeded in coming to an agreement, and so in accordance with the request of my fellow Members of Parliament, the border at both settlements will be open to our commuting compatriots from tomorrow morning”, Mr. Szijjártó stated. He added that the border crossing point linking Jánossomorja and Andau will be open between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m., while the border crossing point between Alsószölnök and Neumarkt will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
