“Waves of migration from Africa can only be prevented through the provision of suitable levels of development funding to African countries, to enable them to keep their population in place”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI on Monday after receiving Ugandan Minister of Security Gen. Elly Tumwine.
“Hungary is indeed doing what it can in accordance with its own capacities and capabilities”, the Minister highlighted. “This year, we have launched a 5.16 billion forint (EUR 15.4 million) economic development cooperation programme in Uganda, with which we are providing funding towards the country’s security and economic development”, he explained. “In addition, Hungarian enterprises are establishing a cyber security centre, developing a biometric identification system and installing a water purification plant at one of Uganda’s refugee camps”, he listed. “The position of the Hungária government is clear: assistance must be taken to where the trouble is, instead of bringing the trouble here”, Mr. Szijjártó declared. “If the UN and the European Commission were to do the same, it would be doing the right thing”, the Hungarian Foreign Minister stated.
