Hungary is temporarily reinstating border controls on the Hungarian-Slovenian border, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced.

According to the Government’s information, the transportation to the Hungarian-Slovenian border of the illegal migrants who were unable to cross the Hungarian-Croatian border due to the closure of the green border effective as of midnight has begun, the Minister said in justification of the decision.

“This measure is being implemented within the boundaries afforded by the Schengen Agreement”, he stressed, indicating that border controls will remain in force on the Hungarian-Slovenian border as long as warranted by the situation.

The Minister further said that the Hungarian Government will also notify the Slovenian Foreign Ministry and the European Commission of its decision.

Mr Szijjártó pointed out: “we created (the Schengen regulations) jointly (in Europe) and we must also observe them jointly”. Hungary is able to fully comply with these regulations: “No one may enter the territory of Hungary, and no one may leave the territory of Hungary in violation of the European regulations”, he stated.

The Minister highlighted that the Government protects Hungary and the Hungarian people “from the flow of immigration flooding into the country without identification, in masses, in an uncontrolled manner”. He added that as a result, the Hungarian Government also protects the common European regulations and values.

The Hungarian-Croatian green border was closed at midnight on Friday. Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács said in Zákány that they employed the same border policing method on this section as on the Hungarian-Serbian border section.
