The demographic situation varies from country to country, but everywhere the goal is to find some kind of a solution. Therefore, monitoring, evaluating and interpreting demographic processes is literally a matter of life and death, the Minister of Human Capacities said on Thursday at the 3rd Budapest Demographic Summit.

On the first day of the two-day international conference held at the Castle Garden Bazaar, Miklós Kásler highlighted that governments are able to provide the material conditions for the births of children to ensure that there are no financial obstacles. However, there is additionally a need for a kind of spiritual background. Therefore, since 2010 the Hungarian government has pursued a family-friendly policy, meaning that in every one of its decisions it considers what impact they will have on families, on the demographic situation and on the future of the nation.

At the same time, more and more people talk about “the Hungarian model” which has existed for nine years now, ever more countries are interested in it because its results are beginning to emerge, the Minister added.

Mr Kásler said he was convinced that demographic problems could be resolved very swiftly if the mentality that families and children are values re-emerged, and if women themselves felt that “their lives become more complete through providing for the survival of the human race”.

The Minister pointed out that in large Western countries one can often observe the loosening and breaking up of traditional values which in turn “also loosens the very fabric of society,” in contrast to countries of the East which preserve their traditions and religion and where the demographic situation is getting better and better.

Therefore, as Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said, the solution is returning to the roots, to conventional European, Christian, human values, meaning faith, family, traditions and respect for our ancestors and descendants.
