Minister of Human Capacities Zoltán Balog handed over on Monday in Budapest the national minority scholarships for this academic year. Out of the 24 schools entitled to bid for the scholarships, students from twenty schools were awarded: ten of German, four of Roma, two of Croatian, two of Slovak, one of Romanian and one of Serbian nationality.

At the awarding ceremony, the Minister said that criteria included both individual performance and belonging to a particular nationality, as the scholarships are also in recognition of national minorities. He said the scholarship’s message is that the government counts on these students, who are not only responsible for themselves but their nationalities as well.

He said these students are part of a generation which can experience as an advantage the fact that Hungary is home to 13 national minorities and the government will continue its efforts of conducting a national minority policy which can be exemplary for other nations.

The aim of the scholarship established in 2011 is to support those secondary education students belonging to national minorities who show excellent academic performance.
