We are grieved to hear of the death of Jenő Buzánszky, Athlete of the Nation, Olympic champion, world championship silver medallist, 49-time member of the national football team and defender for the so-called Golden Team, at the age of 90.

The Ministry of Human Capacities will provide funeral honours for Jenő Buzánszky.

Jenő Buzánszky began his career in Dorog, playing in 274 matches for the home team and 56 in Division 2, scoring 25 goals in official championship matches. He completed his studies at the College of Physical Education in 1964, worked as a trainer between 1960 and 1972 and was technical director of the Dorogi Bányász football team from 1972 until 1985. He was Vice President of the Komárom and later Komárom-Esztergom Country Football Association from 1985-1993 and President from 1993-1997. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Hungarian Football Association and Deputy Chairman of the Talent Pool Committee.

He played in the national team, the legendary Mighty Magyars or Golden Team, 49 times between 1950 and 1956, was a member of gold medal winning Hungarian football team at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and played in the “Match of the Century” against England in London in 1953. The football stadium in his home town of Dorog was named after him in May 2010.

Jenő Buszánszky was the last surviving member of the Golden Team. The death of Jenő Buzánszky is an irreplaceable loss for Hungarian sport; the Ministry will make arrangements for his official funeral after consulting with his family.
