According to Minister of State Károly Kontrát, the unique license plate recognition system put into commission in Csepel on Tuesday will significantly help crime prevention.
Minister of State Kontrát emphasised that the system will enable not only the detection of stolen, wanted, or withdrawn vehicles and vehicles with expired roadworthy certificates, but also makes it possible to take immediate action. This acts as a deterrent and committing crime will not pay in the Csepel area, the Minister of State added.
He also added that the project is exemplary and that other settlements should consider following suit. The Government wishes to maintain order in Hungary and projects such as this one are consistent with these goals.
According to Csepel’s Chief of Police, Péter Papp, the system could also be profitable for other districts of Budapest, since vehicles that are wanted elsewhere will also be detected.
Deputy Mayor of Csepel Lénárd Borbély said that the investment is a milestone for public safety in the district. The establishment of the HUF 15.5 million system was financed by the district’s local government.
The principle behind the project, called “Embracing Security”, is that all roads leading into and out of Csepel are scanned 24 hours-a-day by six, high resolution cameras.
