Minister of Interior Dr. Sándor Pintér received the European Commission’s Commissioner for the Security Union Julian King on 21 September 2017.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the current situation concerning the internal security of the European Union and the fight against terrorism. They agreed that the legal and organisational changes, and measures introduced in Hungary in the interests of counter-terrorism contribute to the security of Hungarian and EU citizens, and enable more effective action on the part of law enforcement bodies.
Cooperation and the exchange of information between member states should be further reinforced however, in addition to which further efforts are required to prevent the spread of damaging content via the internet and attacks within cyberspace.
At the meeting, the Minister of Interior explained: “”According to the Hungarian standpoint, the protection of external borders and the provision of sufficient EU support for countries that are providing for the protection of the European Union’s external borders, is of primary importance”.
Commissioner King visited the Counter-terrorism Information and Criminal Analysis Centre (TIBEK), where he viewed the work of the National Passenger Data Information Unit, which processes and performs the risk analysis of air passenger data, and received comprehensive information on the results of the project, which was realised with the support of the European Commission. The Commissioner praised the fact that Hungary is one of the first countries within the European Union to operate a national organisational unit of this kind to facilitate security (since 2016).
