“Brussels is attacking Hungary with another report that contains untruths so they can take away our right to protect our borders”, the Ministry of Interior stressed in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI on Tuesday.

According to the statement, on Tuesday the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) published a report on its visit to Hungary last October. In response, the Ministry of Interior underlined: “Hungary strongly rejects the claims made in the Council of Europe committee’s report”. “This report is another false set of accusations and the application of pressure on Hungary”, the statement highlighted.

“Hungarian police are successfully protecting the Schengen border of the European Union while fully conforming to both EU and Hungarian law”, wrote the Ministry, according to which “It is unacceptable for such accusations to be made against Hungarian police officers based on the false claims of illegal immigrants and the non-governmental organisations that encourage them”.

“Pro-immigration forces have been expecting Hungary to cease its border protection and close the transit zones from the very beginning, not because it wants to stop and control migration, but because it wants to organise it”, the statements reads, adding: “Hungary is standing by its EU commitments and its duty to protect Europe”.

“Hungary will continue to protect the external borders of the European Union from illegal migration in accordance with the rules and expectations of the Schengen Regulation, and will not transfer its border protection”, the Ministry emphasised in the statement.
