The Justice Minister believes it is time for the authors and organisers of the wide-ranging, coordinated international smear campaign conducted against Hungary in recent weeks and the politicians of Hungarian opposition parties to apologise to the Hungarian people after the Vice President of the European Commission officially recognised yesterday that the coronavirus legislation is not contrary to EU law.

On Thursday on her Facebook account, Judit Varga wrote – from Budapest to Brussels – they have done nothing for weeks but continually accuse the Hungarian government of building a dictatorship. They are spreading evident lies such as that the operation of the Hungarian Parliament has been suspended, and the right of Members of Parliament to exercise control over the decisions of the government has been curtailed. By contrast, the truth is that the Hungarian Parliament is functioning as normal, and Hungarian Members of Parliament have more robust powers as regards the revocation  of the state of danger than many of their European counterparts.

In the Minister’s view, opposition Members of the European Parliament “are competing with one another in the spreading of fake news in Brussels,” and express regret with daily regularity that European institutions are not taking more spectacular action against Hungary. However, the opposition “provocation campaign” launched against Hungary has lost all credibility in light of the announcement made by the Vice President of the European Commission on Wednesday, Ms. Varga stated.

She said also on behalf of the Hungarian people they expect the opposition to put an end to such accusations with immediate effect and to make a public apology “due to the intentional scarring of the country’s reputation”. The European Commission’s position highlighted that it is worth standing up for Hungary on the international scene as with thorough legal argumentation and with the use of facts it is possible to refute unfounded accusations, the Justice Minister wrote.

She pointed out that the Hungarian government continues to work for protecting the lives, health and jobs of Hungarian people, and for successfully restarting the Hungarian economy as soon as possible. In the midst of a global crisis, we need solidarity and unity so that not a single Hungarian should be left by the wayside, Ms. Varga wrote on her Facebook account.
