If (the proceedings) were not conducted on the basis of a political order, they could have been closed yesterday, or even a year ago as there are legal answers to the accusations, the Justice Minister said on Tuesday talking to the public service television news channel M1 about the proceedings instituted against Hungary under Article Seven.

Rendering an account of the hearing held on Monday in Brussels, Judit Varga underlined that at the Monday hearing there was no great interest in the proceedings in the conference room, but this is hardly surprising as “there was nothing new under the Sun,” given that merely “the slanders and accusations repeated by the pro-immigration elite time and again were stated one more time”.

She highlighted that on this occasion the Hungarian government had the opportunity to provide critics with a detailed explanation, extending to the entire context, concerning the legal and political environment. She said the whole proceedings could have ended a long time ago.

According to Mrs Varga, this in itself shows why politics and other Member States should not interfere in legal procedures.

Despite the fact that the EU loves transparency, interestingly, they did not make this hearing public, the Minister continued, adding that they will come back to further steps of the procedure under Article Seven at a later point in time.
