The Ministry of Justice pays tribute to the memory of Imre Nagy and his companions, who were sentenced to death 56 years ago on 15 June 1958.
The unlawful conduct of the communist regime, including the death sentence imposed on the Prime Minister, undermined public trust in justice and legal institutions. The painful legal violations of the showcase trials used the law as a tool of social disintegration, and the judicial system became an instrument of oppression. The lives taken or crippled during the dictatorship oblige the democratic, free Hungary, which is based on the rule of law, to ensure that no sentences shall be imposed by politics. The appropriate application of the law is a safeguard of peaceful social coexistence: the Ministry of Justice pays particular attention to ensuring that this principle prevails.
