On behalf of the government, Justice Minister Judit Varga placed pebbles, flowers and a candle at the Shoes Memorial on the Danube Bank on Thursday, on the Memorial Day of the Hungarian Victims of the Holocaust.

Talking to the public service television news channel M1 at the scene, she said it is very important that by remembering we should continuously remind also coming generations of “the tragic consequences that could arise when a nation loses its freedom”.

We must also remind coming generations to ensure that something like this could never happen again in the world, she added, highlighting that “the Hungarian government is proud that in Hungary our Jewish compatriots can lead a flourishing cultural and religious life, in security”.

Since 2001, the Memorial Day of the Hungarian Victims of the Holocaust has been held on 16 April, remembering that it was on this day in 1944 that the isolation of members of the Hungarian Jewish community in ghettos began.
