During a meeting with representatives of the Venice Commission on 12 May 2017, the Government delegation led by Minister of Justice László Trócsányi explained the contents of the proposed legislation on the transparency of non-governmental organisations point-by-point and according to a strictly legal interpretation.
As the Ministry of Justice’s Parliamentary State Secretary Pál Völner explained with regard to the meeting, it was successfully ascertained that this is a live issue in Europe, that several other countries are also looking into introducing similar legislation, and that Hungary is also following this path.
The parties reviewed the issues raised by the representative of the Venice Commission, including the term of the regulations, its method of publication, administrative burdens and exceptions, as well as possibilities for legal redress and sanctions.
