On 6 March 2016, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Justice Pál Völner told Hungarian television M1 in its evening show that municipalities are standing by the Government on the issue of the referendum on the compulsory quotas.
He added that local people are protesting against the planned refugee camps, which is also why municipalities support the referendum.
A referendum is necessary is to avoid a decision being made on the issue without consulting the National Assembly. It is possible to negotiate on refugees as defined in the Geneva Convention, but it is unacceptable for a decision to be taken in Brussels or Berlin on how many people Hungary should take in. Everyone should be aware of the fact that they have a say in this, the State Secretary pointed out.
He added that pressure at the southern border is growing and border protection must be reinforced.
