At the opening ceremony of Petőfiszállás local council’s 17th Days at Szállás event in Bács-Kiskun County on Saturday, Minister of Justice László Trócsányi said that the Hungary of Saint Stephen is the Hungary of small communities. He added that “We would like the European Union to bring about not only the Europe of institutions, but also the Europe of communities.”

In his welcoming speech the Minister said that globalisation is not a bad thing in itself: it offers a number of opportunities, for instance, to countries lacking natural resources, which have to rely on foreign trade – such as Hungary.

At times, however, globalisation creates destructive waves; it can carry not only opportunities, trade and cultural exchange, but also violence and hatred, he added.

Mr. Trócsányi emphasised that we need a Europe of communities, which is more densely woven and therefore protects and endures better. Otherwise small communities may lose ground and become uncertain. “The protection of Saint Stephen’s heritage and of our European and Christian values is especially important and relevant today, when for over a year these common values – and, among other things, our united and borderless Europe – have been facing unprecedented pressure”, the Justice Minister stressed.

He stated that mass immigration and the migration crisis – which is continuously present and will certainly be a threat for months and years to come – is an extraordinary challenge in terms of the protection of our common European and Christian values, as well as in terms of the preservation and protection of the safety of European citizens.

“A heavy responsibility is imposed on decision-makers by bad, weak and inconsistent decisions, the crisis and the need to understand the essence of processes leading to it, and the risk of failing to manage the crisis by offering an efficient, long-term solution. Our borders must be protected, security must be guaranteed and the causes of the crisis must be eliminated as soon as possible”, Mr. Trócsányi said.
