Hungary has received the Atoms for Peace Award for its measures taken for the total elimination of highly enriched uranium stocks. The prestigious international recognition was received by Minister for National Development Miklós Seszták at the Nuclear Industry Summit (NIS) in Washington, D.C. on 31 March 2016.
Granddaughter of the late President and President of the Eisenhower Group Susan Eisenhower has handed over recognition to 16 countries including Hungary. When receiving the award, the Minister for National Development recalled that the return in several stages of Russian nuclear fuel assemblies containing highly enriched uranium, which had been transported to Hungary for research purposes, ended in the autumn of 2013 with many years of successful work.
The Minister thanked the United States of America, the Russian Federation and the International Atomic Energy Agency for the implementation of the Research Reactor Fuel Return Programme. Strengthening nuclear security and enhancing nuclear non-proliferation efforts are essential to the preservation of international security, Mr. Seszták pointed out.
