Zoltán Guller, Chief Executive of the Hungarian Tourism Agency described the expansion of tourism in March as staggering, and highlighted that there was a double-digit increase both in terms of domestic and foreign guest nights.

He added that there was an expansion in tourism in every region of the country as well as in every accommodation type, while there was a marked growth in the domestic tourism activity of Hungarians. He pointed out that the performance of Germany – one of Hungary’s most significant tourism markets – was also important: guests from Germany generated a double-digit increase in the first three months.

The considerable rise in domestic guest nights – which was also observed in February – further continued in Budapest. He added that in the Lake Balaton region there were 20 per cent more guests which indicates that seasonality tends to play a lesser role.

Mr Guller also highlighted the more than 60 per cent increase in the number of guests coming from Spain which stands above the average of the conventional sender countries.

This year tourism will generate a double-digit growth once again, “this increase will not stop”, the Chief Executive said.
