Following a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Law Enforcement on Tuesday, designate Minister of Defence István Simicskó said that construction of the border barrier and acceleration of the work is of primary importance.
Mr. Simicskó – who until now was Minister of State for Sport – emphasised that with the joint statement by the Visegrád countries it has become clear that the border barrier is the right solution in handling the current migration issue. He promised to do everything possible in order to provide the human and technical resources needed to protect not only Hungary’s borders, but also the Schengen Area’s borders.

In response to a question, he said that following legislative amendments, three to four thousand soldiers deployed at the border might be enough to achieve Hungary’s goals. The possibility of using the reserve force will have to be analysed, he said.

Mr. Simicskó also said that the issues of helicopter capacity and expanding the reserve force system are both important. “We would like to make posts in the reserve force system attractive to young people”, he said.
